about

dyssomnias – selected works (10-12) represents the first collection of work by composer Barry O'Halloran. Drawing influence from the mid to late 20th Century avant-garde, O'Halloran has sought to create a body of work that explores themes of liminality and temporality in sound. The collection is comprised of seven works that utilize instrumental, environmental and found sound sources.

dyssomnias was created over a two and a half year period during which the composer worked almost exclusively during the night – indeed this is where the title of the work is derived from. As such the collection is heavily influenced by the manner in which exhaustion alters both perceptions and conceptions of the world at large. Sounds within these works frequently drift on the edge of audibility, neither fully appearing nor disappearing. At other times sounds expand to become the sole focus of attention, occluding all external stimulus. This contrast between reverie and obsessive focus was in many ways reflective of the experience of working in an often sleep deprived state. Time and thought loop back upon one another in endless circuitous paths. Each moment bears the appearance of stretching out toward infinity; they exist in proximity to one another but without any suggestion as to the overall forward movement of time. dyssomnias is intended to evoke this state of mind for the listener, a state that is at once wakefulness and dreaming, to represent the distorting prism of the night.

A note on listening to the works

Every piece you hear in this collection was created using a pair of over-ear, closed-back headphones in a near silent environment. In many ways, the subtle sense of isolation engendered at both a sonic and psychological level by both of these factors is a central part of the experience of listening to this collection. If you do possess such a pair of headphones, I encourage you to experience the collection using them.
